For fear that this weekend's Botswana National Front (BNF) conference could turn into factional infighting, the Jwaneng Police Station has, despite official denials, reinforced its staff manpower.

However, Station Commander Superintendent, Kebafethetse Mothubane, has categorically denied the report declaring that 'the BNF conference in Jwaneng was not a security threat'.

"We are treating it as a normal activity," said Mothubane. He said that his office would only be of assistance if the BNF requested a permit to hold a political rally.

"Nobody has requested a permit. We can only assist if they request a permit to hold a political rally," he added.

The BNF goes for its conference over the weekend and the party's factions are split over whether the meeting is, according to the organisation's constitution, a 'conference' or 'congress'.

Those loyal to incumbent party president, Otsweletse Moupo are pressing for a conference while those sympathetic to the disposed Kathleen Letshabo faction are demanding a congress.

Speculation is rife that this encounter might turn into another violent skirmish, worse than the infamous Palapye debacle of 1998.
