FOR Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU), a new initiative of multi-nationals to stem conflicts in their areas of operation to be very effective, an appeal has gone to people of the the Niger Delta to promote peaceful values.

Chairman and managing director of Chevron Nigeria limited, Mr. Fred Nelson who handed down the appeal at Idama community in Rivers State, last weekend, stressed on the relevance of peaceful atmosphere to development.

According to him, given an environment of respect for the rule of law and constructive dialogue, the Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) has the potential to transform communities in the region.

He said, "The model allows community folks to come up with development programmes that would create capacity building, education, health. And they also go about the implementation with funds provided by multinationals."

Mr. Nelson who was represented by Mr. George Ombeh at the commissioning of 550 metres internal concrete road with interlocking paveing stones, 550 metre length concrete drainage channels and a generator house donated by the NDDC said the Idama Regional Development Council (RDC) was the first to complete its first set of prioritized projects under the articulated community development plan in the GMoU.

Appealing to the communities in the region where the GMoU is in force to ensure all conflicts are resolved through the GMoU structure, the General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs of the multinational, Engineer Femi Odumabo said the firm would continue to play its role in the system.

"We all have agreed that all conflicts would be resolved through the laid down process under the GMoU. We have to voluntarily continue to follow all the laid down processes for getting things done under the GMoU programme. And finally we have to continue to provide an atmosphere of tranquility for everybody to benefit maximally from the GMoU.

In their separate addresses the trio of Awo Osaki, Director of Community and Rural Development of the NDDC, Mr. Obisike Alfred, and Director for Community Development, Ministry of Community and Chieftaincy Affairs and Hon Asiemie Kala Otaji, Secretary of Akukutoru Local Government Area urged the community to continue to remain peaceful as development thrives only in such environment.
