PRESIDENT Mwanawasa who is admitted to Percy Military Hospital in France has continued responding well to treatment, Chief Government spokesperson, Mike Mulongoti, has said.
In a related development, Vice-President, Rupiah Banda, said God had continued to intercede in the prayers of many Zambians over the illness of the Republican President.
Mr Mulongoti said in Lusaka yesterday that the First Lady Maureen Mwanawasa, who is at the President's bedside phoned him yesterday to confirm that President Mwanawasa was getting better.
"Just this morning (yesterday), I received a phone call directly from the First Lady in France and she told me that our President is responding well to treatment and advised me to inform the nation.
"The most painful thing is to be called a liar when you are saying the truth about our President's health condition. What the Government is saying regarding our President's health condition is true and not falsehood," Mr Mulongoti said.
He was speaking in Lusaka when he officially opened Radio Christian Voice new studios on Alick Nkhata road near the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC).
Mr Mulongoti who is Information and Broadcasting Services Minister said it was sad that some people had criticised the updates that the Government was giving on President Mwanawasa's condition.
Mr Mulongoti called on the general public to continue praying for the quick and complete recovery of President Mwanawasa.
And addressing hundreds of Chipata residents who thronged the Chipata Day Hall to pray for Dr Mwanawasa's quick recovery yesterday, the Vice-President said the President was responding well to treatment in France.
"God has continued to answer our prayers, as you know when the President suffered stroke, he was flown from Egypt to France for a four hour flight and that was after he had a successful operation," he said.
Mr Banda urged all Zambians to continue interceding for the President in prayers until he returns home.
The prayers that lasted for close to two hours were led by clergy from the Muslim fraternity and the Christian denominations who read the scripture from the Koran and the Holy Bible.
Chipata Muslim Association (CMA) chairperson, Yunus Daya, said President Mwanawasa needed the prayers of every Zambian inspite of their religious affiliation.
North-Western Province Deputy Permanent Secretary, Nkolola Hazemba, said at a prayer session held at Solwezi Evangelical Church in Zambia (ECZ) that the Church should continue praying to God for the President's quick recovery.
National Society for Public Service Pensioners, Retirees and Retrenchees of Zambia (PUSERREZA) President, Charles Mushabati, called for unity as the nation prays for the quick recovery of President Mwanawasa.

Mental Health Users Network of Zambia (MHUNZA) vice-president, Mwape Mulubwa, joined the rest of the country in wishing the Republican President quick recovery.
