Kampala — Egypt has completed the rehabilitation of the $280,000 (about sh460m) hospital in Ntungamo.

The Egyptian ambassador, Reda Bebars, said Itojo Hospital in Ruhaama county would be opened after the installation of new medical equipment and the arrival of three Egyptian doctors, two nurses and a laboratory technician.

"The medical equipment has already been shipped from Cairo and will reach Kampala in a few days," Bebars said.

He made the remarks during the celebrations to mark the 55th anniversary of the Egyptian great revolution at his residence in Kololo last Thursday.

"Since the 1952 revolution, Egypt has had many programmes aimed at supporting the development of Africa," Bebars said.

Under the Egyptian Fund for Technical Cooperation with Africa, Bebars noted, $15m had been earmarked for Africa in the last one year.

"Egyptian efforts have been unrelenting in pursuit of solutions to African problems."

He noted that since 1988, Egypt had provided $20m for the Uganda-Egypt Aquatic Weed Control Project. "The project employs 111 people, who remove tonnes of the water weed from lakes Victoria, Kyoga and Albert," he said.

"Under the same project, we are developing Ggaba and Portbell fish landing sites on Lake Victoria and three others on Lake Kyoga,"

International affairs state minister Okello Oryem commended Egypt for the scholarships offered to Ugandans.

"The various courses offered have enhanced efficiency in areas of health, education, engineering, transport, information communication technology, agriculture, fisheries, water, environment and diplomacy."
