Nigeria: National Assembly Boils Over Committee Reshuffle

21 July 2008

There are indications that the plan by leadership of both chambers of the National Assembly to reshuffle their standing committees is causing ripples and may aggravate moves for impeachment by disgruntled members.

Some senators believed to have worked against Senate President David Mark are presently in secret talks to resist any attempt to sweep them off their committees.

Already in the House of Representatives, tongues are wagging over the removal of Festus Adegoke as Chairman Committee on Appropriation by Speaker Dimeji Bankole and the imminent reshuffle of the committees ahead of the House's planned recess next week.

Soon after the Appeal Court judgment that retained Senator Mark, Principal Officers in the upper legislative arm revealed that a major reshufflement was on the way.

Speaking to newsmen at the Senate President's lodge while celebrating Mark's victory, Senate Majority Leader, Senator Teslim Folarin, confirmed that the Senate will witness a reshuffle soon after resuming from recess.

According to him, "There are plans on the way to reshuffle the committees. You will expect that after one year. It is necessary to refresh but it has nothing to do with this judgment. The reshufflement will come when we resume in September."

A source close to the Senate leadership told in Daily Trust that the reshuffle exercise will serve as compensation for some senators who supported Senator Mark during his travails at the Appeal Court.
