Bauchi State government has earmarked N20 million for rural women as interest-free loans in an effort to eradicate poverty among them, the Personal Assistant to the state governor on Non-Governmental Organizations, Hajia Ladi Ilelah, said at the weekend.

Hajia Ladi said all necessary arrangements had been concluded to distribute the loan, which is revolving and repayable in 12 months to women in rural areas of the state through their associations to enable them engage in petty trading and similar engagements.

The aide said with this loan, the women would be able to engage in agricultural activities such as rearing of domestic animals, poultry as well as petty trading.

"At the inception of this administration, we toured all the 20 local governments in the state to assess the condition of our rural women. We discovered that one of their major problems is lack of resources to enable them engage in some commercial activities. To alleviate their poverty we came up with a lot of programs to assist them", she said.

According to her, the administration of Governor Yuguda had provided over 5,000 sewing machines and 20,000 refrigerators and other house hold appliances that can be used as sources of income to this category of rural women in the past three months.

"This administration believes that for any fight against poverty to make any meaningful impact in our society rural women must be empowered. We also discovered that with little these women can do a lot. as little amount as N5, 000 can make a whole lot of difference to a rural woman and her family". While assuring the rural women of government's desire to alleviate poverty at the grassroots, Hajia Ladi called on the beneficiaries to make the best use of the money and see it as a means of making them self reliant and independent.
