Milange

Mozambican President Armando Guebuza said on Sunday that the country needs at least one medium level technical school in each district if there is to be sustainable development.

He was addressing a meeting with business people and influential personalities in the town of Milange, in the central province of Zambezia.

He said it was a painful experience to see a student who has completed grade 12 in secondary school fail to make a difference in his community.

But Guebuza added that one secret to success in the fight against poverty has to do "with our way of being, our culture". "If we introduce our culture into national projects", he claimed, "we will attain the sustainable development we desire. We must use our resources in a rational manner, including our human resources'.

On the world energy crisis, an issue raised by some business people as a major stumbling block in their activities, Guebuza pointed out that there are some who think that if the country can produce its own fuel, it will no longer feel the effects of that crisis.

Guebuza warned that this idea might prove an illusion, because even oil producing countries are themselves paying dearly for the increased prices of fuel.

He added that to produce oil one needs investment in equipment, in opening wells, in wages, among other expenses associated to this activity.

"In our case, the response to this crisis lies in increasing production and productivity in areas where we have a comparative advantage", he said. He gave the example of some countries that do not produce oil, but produce grain, making this production a comparative advantage to their benefit.

Commenting on the businesses complaint of lack of commercial banks in Zambezia, and high interest rates, Guebuza expressed a belief that the situation will change in the near future. But he warned that interest rates will only drop with increased production and productivity, which would lead to competition between banks, resulting in offers of competitive interest rates.

Guebuza reiterated that the government will do all in its power to ensure that the private sector remains a privileged partner in the fight against poverty. "Without the private sector, the country will not defeat poverty". He declared.
