Actors in the environment sector last week made an inventory of what has been done and what ought to be done in a bid to slow down the rate of biological diversity loss in the country within the spirit of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development organised at Rio de Janeiro.

The two-day workshop which ran from Thursday to Friday was organised to fine tune the fourth report on the state of biodiversity in Cameroon. The report is expected to be submitted to government for onward processing. In his opening speech at the workshop, the Minister Delegate to the Minister of the Environment and Nature Protection, Nana Aboubakar Djallo, recalled the importance of the exercise, stating inter alia that government has already prepared and forwarded three of such reports as required by the recommendations of the 2002 Convention on Biological Diversity.

"In 2002, the Biodiversity Convention decided it will, up to 2010, ensure a reduction in the rate of biodiversity loss and in order to assess the milestone covered it adopted a permanent action orientated framework and defined indicators to evaluate the state of biodiversity and its evolution", the Minister Delegate said. Cameroon, he said, has so far carried out a number of actions to fight against biodiversity degradation. Some of the actions include: the institution of the Operational Green Sahel, celebration of various international days (environment, biodiversity, desertification, preservation of the Ozone layer and Humid zones), and permanent communication.

The Yaounde workshop focussed on three main areas: Agriculture and Livestock biodiversity, Wildlife and Plant biodiversity, and aquatic and microbial biodiversity. Participants had as mission to provide and complete information on the status and trends of various components of the three sectors.
