Over a hundred inhabitants of Ngyen-mbo village in Momo Division travelled to see Governor Abakar Ahamat on July 16th with reports that Bali Nyongha, their neighbours, had invaded their land and their wives cannot farm.
They carried placards, some of which read: "yesterday was Bawock, today is Ngyen-mbo, who next?" "The government should resettle us. Bali has driven us out of our land". "Why is the government not disciplining Bali?". It was a delegation of fuming men, women and children that wanted the Governor to help them this farming season. They said the Balis continue to invade and farm in the land which was decreed to them as far back as 1982. They were bitter that their Bali neighbours also go harvesting what they plant, construct houses, destroy, brutalize and recently killed three young Ngyen-mbo boys. According to them, the local administration in Mbengwi has been unable to handle the problem and that is why they were at the Governor's office because the issue concerns two divisions, Momo and Mezam.
Governor Abakar received leaders of the protesting Ngyen-mbos and promised to have a commission go to the disputed area and report back with facts before 25 July 2008. He appealed for calm and urged the Ngyen-mbos to give peace a chance while the administration tries to settle the issue. Governor Abakar promised to travel to the disputed area in the days ahead for a personal assessment.
Meanwhile, Dr. Fon Gahnyongha of Bali acknowledged that the farming season often provokes negligible clashes between the Balis and Ngyen-mbos but denied knowledge of the current clashes. He acknowledged that a special presidential decree No.77/525 of December, 1977 and that of 82/020 of 1982 settled the dispute which is yet to properly settle issues on the ground. According to the Fon of Bali, the dispute is simply a matter of misunderstanding between Ngyen-mbo and Bali people who inter marry and do business together. He regretted the situation and prayed for lasting peace. It would be recalled that barely a month after taking office as the new Administrator of the North West, Governor Abakar received protesting Baforchu or Mbu people claiming that Bali Nyongha had invaded their land.
