Police announced yesterday that it has arrested 16 hardcore criminals in a crackdown on crime giving city residents sleepless nights.
The Dar es Salaam special police zone commander, Mr Suleiman Kova said yesterday the arrests follow a special police operation to combat ever increasing incidences of armed robbery, murders, breaking of godowns and carjacking. He said the olice had recovered various weapons including three shotguns and a pistol along with army uniforms believed to have been used to effect robberies.
He listed the suspects as two Sinza residents named Evans Peter, 34 and Gerald Mhenga, 34. A bank employee Felician Mahimbo, 42 is also being held by the police. The three are alleged to have killed a security guard, Elias Kelebusa, 48, at Kitunda and took away a Suzuki Escudo and some valuable items.
He said police have launched a manhunt for other suspects said to be hiding in Morogoro and Coast regions after hearing of arrests of accomplices. Mr Kova praised his men for their success, as they recovered a car that was reported stolen a week ago in the city.
"We respond to crime incidences immediately as we get informed. We protect our sources and inform them about developments in three days," Mr Kova underlined. Journalists yesterday found about 20 sex workers and some of their customers held at the central police station.
Commenting on the arrests, Mr Kova said, this time the police have opted for a new approach, of arresting both the prostitutes and their clients.
"Prostitution is not a crime but running a life using what one earned from the dirty business is a serious crime," he ventured to say. At the same time, Mr Kova thanked a preaching group at Mbezi beach for its cooperation in reducing crime.
The church body is bringing together and rehabilitate jobless youths in various areas including giving them education. " I thank 'slow army.' The police is going give them maximum cooperation in their noble cause. I ask others to join us in this endeavor to ensure that we have a peaceful Dar," he remarked.
