President Jakaya Kikwete has directed the Tanga City Council to build its own district hospital and leave Bombo regional hospital as a referral one.
Speaking to hospital staff and wananchi who had gathered at Bombo hospital, he said it was overstretched and incapable of treating even minor illnesses which could be treated at district hospitals.
"You can build your district hospital if you indeed want to", said the president. He asked the Tanga mayor, Mr Salim Kisauji, how much funds the central government allocates to the city council.
He said it was the government intention to turn Bombo and other regional hospitals in the country into referral hospitals so as to minimize the influx of patients to Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam.
However, he said, the plan had not taken off because of many obstacles. These include shortage of modern equipment in hospitals, specialists and lack of funds.
The president observed that it was unfair for people to travel long distances for treatment at the regional hospital while it could be obtained from the district hospital.
"The absence of district hospitals within reach of wananchi encourages the use of services of traditional healers who obviously take advantage to fill the vacuum", said the president.
In such a situation, he explained, people will have no other option but to go for such alternatives.
President Kikwete, who was impressed by the on-going renovation of the hospital, expressed his satisfaction with services rendered at Bombo.
He said during his inspection of the hospital wards no one had complained to him about inadequate services.
President Kikwete rounds up his nine-day Tanga region tour today.
