In an effort to promote a conducive and habitable environment, Lagos State Government has placed an embargo on the processing of application for change of use by Lagosians wishing to change the original use of their land.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele, disclosed this over the weekend while explaining the efforts being put in place by the State Government for proper coordination of physical development, so as to curtail the springing up of illegal buildings in the State.
The Commissioner stated that Lagos is one of the fastest growing mega city in the world thus, Government has resolved to enforce and adhere to its physical planning laws and regulations and revisit existing laws where it becomes necessary.
To therefore curb the indiscriminate conversion of landed property from residential to commercial purposes and vice- versa, Bamidele said Government has henceforth placed an embargo on building approval's application for change of use.
Similarly, he said plans are underway to introduce a two level Development permit approval process. "The first approval will cover developments to Foundation/Damp Proof Course (DPC) level, while the second and final approval will be obtained thereafter", he added.
Speaking further, the Commissioner noted that in order to further strengthen and equip the State Demolition Operation Team, to promptly check contravention and illegal development, 27 additional Building Inspectors were recruited, trained and deployed to various zonal monitoring offices.
He said with all the measures being put in place, it will help in reducing the incidence of collapsed buildings in the State.
The Commissioner stated that Government will continue to intervene in socially and environmentally degraded areas like it did at Oluwole by relocating the residents to Shasha Housing Estate to consolidate the Lagos Island CBD upgrade and give the residents a new lease of life.
He said work is presently ongoing to re-develop Oyingbo market into a modern market fitted with necessary facilities and infrastructure through public private partnership.
