The Strategic Grain Reserve (SGR) stock decreased to 79,369 tonnes in May 2008 from 94,509 tonnes the previous month.
"The decrease was due to sale of maize and sorghum to the WFP ,World Food Programme, the PMO, Prime Minister's Office and private traders to alleviate food shortages and stabilise food prices," the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) said in its last month's economic review.
PMO bought 2,066.8 tonnes from SGR for distributing to areas facing food shortages.
WFP and private traders bought 7,597 tonnes and 71,487 tonnes respectively.
The May 2008 stock was 32 per cent less than 128,350 of May 2007.
In August 2006, SGR had a lower stock level: 28,000 tonnes.
According to the review, the food supply in Tanzania was generally satisfactory in May 2008, although some areas which had been hit by floods and drought had a deficit of 81,151 tonnes.
Between January 2008 and May when the Government waived import duty on maize to bring in 300,000 tonnes of grains, only 8,070 tonnes of maize were imported because food prices have skyrocketed across the world.
On a month-to-month basis, the wholesale prices of food except maize rose in in May 2008.
However, average maize prices eased in May in an anticipation of improving food supplies as the harvest season was approaching in some parts of the country.

The maize price eased from Sh33, 306 a100-kilo bag in April 2008 to Sh30, 278 the following month.
