Banks have been urged to start lending schemes to buy new motor vehicles to reduce fuel consumption in Tanzania.

Energy and Water Utilities Authority director-general Haruna Masebu told stakeholders in the energy industry in Dar es Salaam yesterday that new fuel-saving cars were required to help minimise the oil consumption.

He said banks in other countries had started providing loans for new vehicles.

"Such arrangements will enable buyers to pay for car purchases over long periods hence increasing affordability levels of prospective motorists.

New cars generally use less fuel per kilometre and this arrangement is likely to translate into savings in relation to fuel and repair costs," he said.
