Sokoto State Commissioner for Forestry and Animal Health, Alhaji Kabiru Tafida, has blamed desertification in the state on the indiscriminate felling of trees by the people.

Tafida told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Sokoto that the ministry had already taken certain measures aimed at controlling logging in the state.

He said that a directive had been issued to local government officers to liase with traditional rulers in sensitising the people to the environmental dangers of indiscriminate felling of trees.

Tafida said that chairmen of the local government councils had also been directed to fence the trees cultivated in their areas so as to protect them from destruction.

He, nonetheless, reminded the people of existing laws outlawing illegal felling of trees.

Tafida also urged the people to plant and nurture trees in their respective areas, as part of the afforestation schemes.
