Vendors at the new Brikama Craft Market have reacted swiftly to the recent increase of the yearly canteen rental fees by the management of the Brikama Area Council. They regard this rental increment from D300 to D500 as very expensive and unbearable. The Vendors said that the increment is inappropriate, unrealistic and untimely as they are nowadays experiencing a sharp decline in the sales of their products which is coinciding with the regular increases in the prices of the basic food commodities.

"We are family men. It is very hard for us to maintain our families as business is very slow now and with the end of the tourist season, we rarely make sales. It is really hard and unbearable," lamented a vendor.

The vendors, therefore, called on the BAC to be considerate and to rescind this decision.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Brikama Area Council, Mr. Serigne Modou Joof, confirmed the yearly canteen rent fee increment from D300 to D500. He, however, maintained that the increase to increase is necessary and appropriate. According him, the Council conducted a feasibility study of the canteen rental fee which has been in place for the past twelve years and that when compared to the Kanifing Municipal Council, Banjul City Council and Kerewan Area Council, it was discovered that BAC operates the lowest of fees. Mr. Joof said that they have also increased their canteen rental fee.
