Gambia: Gambia And UK School Sign Twinning Partnership

A twinning partnership agreement was, on Wednesday, 11th June, 2008, signed between St. Edward Senior Secondary College in Ramford, Essex, United Kingdom, and the Jamisa Upper Basic School, in Brikama. The twinning ceremony, held at the Jamisa School grounds, was characterized by speeches, exchange of goodwill messages, drama and cultural entertainment by the two schools.

The representatives of St. Edward College, Madam Annie, Director of the English Language Department, and Madam Linsey, English and Literature teacher, both spoke at length on the basis of the partnership.They noted that the twinning will enhance the sharing of experiences, learning, exchange of teacher's scheme, records and exchange between the pupils and staff of the two schools.

On his part, the chairperson of the parent teacher's association, Madam Mamie Senghore, expressed delight over the twinning partnership and welcomed their partners from the United Kingdom.

The principal of Jamisa Upper Basic School, Mr. Batuwo Jaiteh, who signed the twinning document, on behalf of his school, spoke on the numerous achievements registered by his School. Mr. Jaiteh said that his school, in 2003, emerged as the best school in the Basic Education Certificate Examination and that in 2005, it came out as the best in GAMBECE Examination results in the western region.

Principal Jaiteh also cited the constraints of his School, such as inadequate water supply, lack of a school library, science lab, technical lab and inadequate teaching and learning materials, amongst others.

The twinning agreement which was made possible through the efforts of Africa Development Association for Progress (ADAP), a UK based charitable body, through Mr. Jesse Konadu Olayeye and Mr. Amma Ukachuku, will endeavour for future development projects that are of benefit to the two schools. The vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. Suleiman Sanno, head boy of Jamisa Upper Basic School.
