THREE schoolboys in Solwezi died on the spot at the weekend in Kang'wena area on the Solwezi-Chingola Road after a Toyota Corolla driven by a mine employee hit them.

In another development, an office building complex housing three micro-finance institutions in Solwezi was yesterday reduced to rubble after a fire swept through the structure destroying property worth millions of Kwacha.

North-Western Province police chief, Fabian Katiba yesterday confirmed both the road traffic accident and the fire in an interview in Solwezi.

Mr Katiba said the accident happened on Saturday as the Kang'wena Basic School pupils played near the road around 14:30 hours.

A First Quantum Minerals (FQM) employee, Morton Sokolo of Lulamba Township in Chingola, driving from Solwezi, knocked down the pupils, killing them on the spot.

Mr Katiba identified the pupils as Passwell Mwamba, 14, a grade six pupil of Kaisala village, Davies Kanfwepa, 14, also in grade six, of Mbalashi village and a grade seven pupil, Joseph Moyonga, 13, of Kabemba village.

He said the bodies of the boys were taken to Solwezi General Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem, while Mr Sokolo was arrested for causing death by dangerous driving.

Mr Katiba said the fire started around 02:00 hours and was only extinguished by fire fighters from Kansanshi Mine three hours later.

The gutted old council building on Solwezi's Independence Avenue also houses a bureau de change and a travel agency.

It is situated opposite Shoprite currently under reconstruction after a fire swept through it in January.

Mr Katiba said police were investigating the cause of the fire.

While the front part of the building housing Blue Finance, Microfin and Nedfin, Nunny Bureau de Change, North-Western Travel agency and Vision Care centre options was completely damaged, some items were salvaged from offices at the back.

Vision Care optometrist and contact lens consultant, Ashok Kumar Deevi who was found evaluating the loss said everything including optical accessories was lost at the centre only opened early this year.

Mr Deevi estimated the damages to be in excess of K160 million.
