UGANDAN traders should get official Sudan visas from the embassy instead of border posts, the country's ambassador to Uganda, Hassan Ibrahim Gadkarimm, has advised.
"I don't know why the traders don't come to the embassy," Gadkarimm said in an interview.
Recent media reports claimed that Ugandan traders were mistreated in Sudan, were stopped from vending on the streets and must rent and sell their merchandise from permanent buildings.
The reports added that the Ugandans can't cross to Sudan before paying sh70,000 to Sudanese officials after paying for the visas.
The reports prompted Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA) to open a file for the traders who have been mistreated.
"It is only after they have got problems that some come to us," he said.
"They should report to the embassy for us to know who has travelled to Sudan. This makes communication easy in case of problems."
"KACITA, the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other stakeholders should come to the embassy to discuss how to overcome these non-tariff barriers to trade between our countries," Gadkarimm said.
"For those who can't come to the embassy, we have opened a consular general's office in Gulu where they can get visas and report problems that hinder trade between Sudan and Uganda," he said.

"We cannot be ungrateful to Ugandan traders. It is not the policy of either Salva Kiir of the government of Southern Sudan or of president Omar al Bashir to mistreat Ugandans. All of us need to live peacefully," he said.
