OVER 50% of pregnant women in Uganda are anaemic, the senior medical officer in charge of nutrition at the Ministry of Health, Dr Jacinta Sabiiti, has said.

Dr Sabiiti says the low level of blood increases the risk of death for the mother and baby during pregnancy and delivery.

Sabiiti was speaking during workshop for councillors and heads of departments in Kabale town.

She said the most common cause of anaemia in pregnant women, children and the elderly was poor nutrition, worm infestation and malaria.

Dr. Patrick Tusiime, the district director of health services, said the workshop aimed at teaching district leaders the causes of anaemia and how it can be prevented.

He advised local leaders to sensitise residents about the need to revert to traditional foods such as dark green vegetables, beans, millet and sorghum which are readily available and affordable.

The district speaker, Rev. Jack Katarishangwa, called for the narrowing of the gap between health workers and local leaders for the successful implementation of health programmes.
