Nairobi — Waa Girls followed in the footsteps of their boys' namesakes in retaining the Coast Province secondary schools soccer title.

Waa defeated Kombeni 1-0 in the final at Shimo la Tewa at the weekend.

Waa, of Kwale District, notched in the match winner in the 60th minute when Zena Hassan found the back of the net. Kombeni of Kaloleni fought hard for an equaliser but poor finishing by their forwards was their undoing.

In the semi-finals, Waa who won the trophy last year after crushing Kilifi Township 6-0 in Kwale, edged out Taita's Shimbo 3-0 with Mildred Awino scoring a double in the 35th and 41st minutes as Vindani Abdalla netted the third in the 58th minute.

Kombeni put up a good account of themselves to beat Likoni 2-0 with both goals scored by Kilifi's Moving the Goalpost (MTG) striker, Riziki Mbodze in the 24th and 31st minutes. Waa coach Grace Atieno said they deserved to win the trophy for the second year running because they were the best side in the province.

"We want to start early preparations for the national championships," Atieno said.

Waa Boys clinched the boys' soccer crown when they registered a 6-4 penalty shoot-out victory over Tononoka.
