A marine and ocean services centre worth Sh85 million is to be built at the Coast by the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute.

The institute's executive director, Dr Johnson Kazungu, Monday said the Government had provided Sh80 million for the centre in its 2008/2009 Budget.

"We need to construct a facility that will be able to handle major international conferences as well as offer accommodation facilities to at least 40 visitors during such meetings," said Mr Kazungu.

He was speaking during the official launch of the institute's service delivery charter at its headquarters by Fisheries minister Paul Otuoma.

Dr Kazungu said that the centre would enable the organisation host more countries for programmes in the West Indian Ocean region and thanked the Government for its support.

More opportunities

He said that the construction is expected to start in two months time and will take 18 months to complete.

In his speech, the minister challenged the organisation to open up more opportunities in the aquatic sector for rapid economic development. He said this includes new fishing grounds in less exploited water bodies like Lake Turkana, intensification of deep sea fisheries of the Indian Ocean and coming up with new innovative aquaculture techniques.

"The institute should also strive to have practical demonstration aquaculture sites for promotion of aquaculture enterprises along the shores of lakes and the ocean.

"It should promote methods that will encourage restoration and recovery of dwindling stocks of fisheries in overexploited water bodies," said Dr Otuoma.

Dr Otuoma who also inaugurated the institute's board of management asked the staff to uphold high standards of professionalism and zero tolerance to corruption as spelt out in the charter.

The minister appointed Prof Peninah Obuodho as the board's chairperson for a period of three years, effective from June 2.
