Kenya: 'Opposition' Watchdog Set Up By Five Parties

Nairobi — Five political parties not affiliated to the Grand coalition Government Monday launched their own parliamentary watchdog.

Dr Dan Alila, chairman of the Grand Parliamentary Watch, said its role would be to monitor the Government's performance.

"We are particularly monitoring the way the Government will handle the Constitutional Review process," the chairman said, at a Press conference at 680 Hotel in Nairobi.

The formation of the grand coalition saw several political parties join the Government.

Attempts to form a Grand Opposition in Parliament has failed.

Although a group of MPs in Parliament has been trying to keep the Government on its toes, the new watchdog would be the only civil society organisation that would play the role of an opposition party.

Dr Alila said the Grand Parliamentary Watch would be publishing quarterly reports that would be issued to the public.

"We shall also be having bi-weekly deliberations to assess the state of public governance and management of natural resources by the grand coalition Government," he said.

The watchdog will also appoint 20 shadow ministers to keep an eye on every ministry.
