FIVE residents of Lira district have been killed in the past three weeks over land disputes, the Police have said. The community liaison officer at Lira Central Police Station, Jodaga Gemonamola, said the incidents occurred in the sub-counties of Amac, Apala, Adwari, Abako and Lira municipality.

The dead are Lucano Otim, Adit Tericana, Milton Okello and Dorcus Achola, who was beheaded by unknown assailants near Lira military barracks on Saturday.

The identity of the fifth person killed in Abako could not be established by press time.

Achola, a trader based in Juba, South Sudan, was on Saturday found lying in a pool of blood in her compound at Senior Quarters after she was beheaded by unknown people. Gemonamola said six suspects had been charged in connection with the murders.

The accused are Robert Okello, Martin Ogwang, Bosco Okello, Albino Okwir and two others, only identified as Obua and Amuku.

"All these murders were either committed by close relatives or friends," Gemonamola told The New Vision on Friday.

He added that they had recorded more murder cases this month followed by land disputes, criminal trespass and malicious damage to property.

Gemonamola noted that many of the murder victims were shot dead, beaten or hacked using machetes.

"We have undertaken community policing and sensitised residents on dispute resolution but people's attitudes have not changed.

"I think it will take a gradual process," he said.

The resident district commissioner, Joan Pacoto, said she would soon convene an emergency security meeting to review the incidents and design solutions.

She added that the district Police chief, Raymond Otim, 5th Division commander Brig. Hudson Mukasa and other security officials would attend the meeting.

But Pacoto, who also chairs the district security committee, urged everyone to take charge of their security and be on the lookout for criminal elements.
