Parents have appealed to lawmakers to amend the Children Act, which they blamed for indiscipline among students.

Kenya National Parents Association secretary-general Musau Ndunda said the law had resulted in children taking their parents hostage.

"We must review the Children Act, which has made it difficult for parents to discipline their children," she said.

The secretary-general appealed to the Government to consider abolishing boarding schools so that parents could monitor the progress of their children at home.

Mr Ndunda was speaking at a disaster awareness and counselling workshop in Busia.

Meanwhile, national vice- chairman of the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association, Mr John Awiti, has said the unrest in schools could be a result of the post-election violence.

He said some students participated in the chaos and were now simply doing the same at school.

"During the post-election violence, some students participated in the violence, opposing the authority, and want to continue opposing the authorities in schools," he said Tuesday.
