At the beginning nobody gave her much of a chance.

A budding musician who had never been on a stage before the initial auditions, she seemed an inexperienced nervous girl during the first few auditions.

But 19-year-old Nicolette Kiige from Jinja defied all odds and on Monday was voted by Africa into the finals of the 2008 East and Southern Africa Idols TV reality show. This time, she had no words.

"I'm shocked," she managed to stammer out. "I mean, the finals, who could have thought that?"

It was a tense moment since all the judges, including the Ugandan, Richard Kawesa and host Lebo from Zimbabwe, had decided on Sunday that the final two would be Eric from Zimbabwe and Trinah from Zambia. But Africa spoke, and for the second time in two months, another Ugandan girl stands on the threshold of winning a singing reality show.

Esther Nabaasa, 20, last month won the Tusker Project Fame which featured contestants from Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. She won sh130m and a recording contract. If Nicolette wins, she will get $80,000 (about sh130m) and a recording contract with Sony BMG.

Although her performance last Sunday was not as impressive as the previous one, she seemed tired, she remained true to herself, and Africa decided they wanted her.
