THE MP for Nwoya in Amuru district has accused the presidential adviser in the north of threatening violence and defamation.

Simon Oyet on Sunday told journalists at Diana Gardens that he had filed the cases against Richard Todwong at the Gulu Central Police Station

The MP alleged that Todwong sent to his mobile phone threatening text messages because of talking about a huge chunk of land that he claimed Todwong and his brother, a senior army officer, had fenced off in Purongo sub-county in Amuru.

"Todwong said he would deal with me in a way I would remember for the rest of my life. Another message said I would shed real tears," said Oyet.

"He said he had evidence that I had picked money from the Alur in exchange for a large piece of land owned by the Payira clan."

Oyet vowed to do all it takes to reclaim the disputed 6,000 acres and give it to the displaced 70 families.

He said he would petition Parliament to form a committee to investigate allegations of land grabbing by government officials.

Last month, an army MP, Maj. Gen. Julius Oketta, had a skirmish with residents over a piece of land in Amuru.

But Todwong told another press conference at Acholi Inn on Sunday that Oyet's allegations were baseless.

He said the MP wanted to discredit a planned meeting between President Museveni and Amuru cultural leaders due in Kampala on July 25 to discuss land issues.

"The text messages I sent to Oyet were advising him to be a responsible leader and stop talking recklessly," said Todwong, adding that the MP was panicking and thinking he would stand against him in 2011.
