Minister of women affairs and social development, Hajia Saudatu Usman Bungudu, has tasked children's parliament on a free and fair election and equal representation.

She gave the charge at the official opening of the 2008 national children's holiday which culminated in the election of principal officers and inauguration of the 4th national children's parliament in Abuja.

About 200 children across the country are participating in the week-long activities which include a valedictory session of the last parliament as well as inauguration cum inaugural session of the new parliament.

It could be recalled that the last Children's Parliament election took place in 2005.

Following the guideline for the elections prescribed for three years term for the parliament, the ministry conducted elections to select new principal officers who would pilot the affairs of the parliament for the next three years.

In her own remark, the Director Child Development of the ministry, Mrs. Rosemary Abdullahi noted that childrens' issues and concerns on the rights of children unlike before, had been increasingly gaining ground in the country.

She however, urged the children to be good ambassadors of their various states and the country at large.

Also speaking at the event, United Nations International Childrens' Fund (UNICEF) representative, Mr. Kenneth Ozoemenam noted that the children's parliament had been a great achievement in the country.

He disclosed that about N12m had been mapped out for the week long activities to ensure the rightful participation and comfort of the children.
