Uganda: Opposition Raps Govt Over Arrests

Kampala — THE Uganda Young Democrats, the youth wing of the Democratic Party and the Conservative Party (CP) have condemned the arrest of the Buganda Kingdom officials.

CP leader John Ken Lukyamuzi said the charges against the three officials were baseless. According to Lukyamuzi, they were arrested because of being critical of the proposed Land Bill.

Information minister Charles Peter Mayiga, his deputy Medard Lubega and civic education committee chairperson Betty Nambooze were arrested last Friday. They are accused of terrorism, promoting sectarianism, inciting violence and sedition.

Addressing journalists in Kampala on Monday, Lukyamuzi called upon the Speaker of Parliament, Edward Ssekandi, to summon the MPs on recess to discuss the issue.

The Uganda Young Democrats (UYD) argued that the arrest was aimed intimidating the three officials so that they stop opposing the Land Bill.

"President Yoweri Museveni has lost the land debate and has turned against those he thinks led to his loss," UYD vice-president Mukasa Mbidde told journalists on Monday.

Mbidde said the suspects' relatives, friends and lawyers had a right to access the suspects.

"Up to now (Monday afternoon), we have failed to see our people because security officials have denied us access to see them and they are being rotated from one district to another," he said.

The three, who were arrested from Kampala, were taken to Ibanda, Kyenjojo and Bundibugyo districts on Saturday night.

But on Monday, Nambooze was shifted from Kyenjojo to Bundibugyo, Mayiga was moved from Bundibugyo to Kyenjojo and Lubega from Ibanda to Bundibugyo.
