Abuja — United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, Africa 's global bank, has donated five security vehicles and other communication gadgets worth several millions of naira to the Imo State Government, in an effort geared towards safeguarding the lives and property of the residents and corporate investments in the state.
The bank, in a statement yesterday, said that this donation brings to five the number of states that have benefited from the bank's benevolence in the area of supporting the fight against crime.
The Items donated to the Imo state government by UBA Plc include: Five toyota hilux security vehicles fully fitted with modern communication gadgets and 200 walkie-talkies to help adequately equip the police to attend to distress calls.
Presenting the equipments to the executive governor of Imo state, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, at the state Exco Hall on Tuesday July 15, 2008, the deputy managing director-south, United Bank for Africa Plc, Mr. Phillips Oduoza, said the gesture was in response to the call by the state government for business concerns that operate in the state, to support the government's effort towards combating crime in the state.
Mr. Oduoza reiterated the security situation in the country, noting that business will strive and investors will channel their investments to the country when lives and properties are properly safeguarded.
While commending UBA for its contributions to the upliftment of the state, the state's executive governor, chief Ikedi Ohakim acknowledged that the bank is playing a bigger role in the socio-economic development of the country in general and the state in particular. He described UBA as a dependable corporate citizen that has continually supported government policies and programmes.
On the entourage of the executive governor to receive the items were; Dr. Ada Okwuonu, Imo state deputy governor, and other members of the State's Security Council.
The Governor further recalled that UBA, as part of its contribution towards the success of the Clean and Green Initiative of the state, has also offered to handle the beautification of some key locations within the metropolis in addition to partnering the State on the development of Oguta Lake Tourist Resort.
