The South-south South-east Development Group (SSSEDG) has commended the effort of Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) under the leadership of the Managing Director, Olubunmi Peters for ensuring effective maintenance of the nation's roads.

Speaking through its leader, Elias Odoemena, the group said FERMA has achived a lot despite the financial constraints the agency is undergoing.

Odoemena urged the Federal Government to release its budgetary allocations to it to enable it make meaningful progress since no serious construction work could be carried out effectively during the rainy season.

He commended the boss of the agency for his contribution in making sure that Nigeria imbibes maintenance culture instead of allowing roads to deteriorate before a new contract is awarded.

Maintenance culture, he said, helps in maintaing not only the roads but private and government-owned infrastructure.

The group urged President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua to release capital votes due to FERMA at the begining of every year as it would help it to achieve a lot in order to reduce carnage on our roads.

Odoemena also asked the President to look into FERMA's funding pattern and increase its allocation.

"It is a pity that if you go to some states FERMA is operating with only one pick up truck and this delays its supervision schedule", he said."
