Abuja — The Inspector General of Police, Sir Mike Okiro, was yesterday ordered by the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Capital Market Institutions, Banking and Currency, to arrest the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of First City Monument Bank (FCMB), Mr. Ladi Balogun.
Honourable Ahmed Aliyu Wadada and Honourable Ogbuefi Ozomgbachi, the two joint chairmen of the Committees in a statement last night said "by the leave of the Honourable Speaker, and by Virtue of Section 89 (1, d), of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, do hereby issue a warrant of arrest on the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of First City Monument Bank (FCMB)"
The statement said the warrant was issued on Mr. Balogun "for severally, deliberately and obstinately refusing to honour the series of invitations to appear before the joint committee in the matter of its investigation into the unsatisfactory practices in the post consolidation banking industry which the House of Representatives by resolution 'HR21/2007' mandated the joint committee to thoroughly investigate and report.
"The Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the National Assembly's Chief Sgt-At-Arms, are, by this warrant authorised and mandated to arrest the said MD, as well as to compel and cause him to appear before this joint committee sitting as follows; 31st July, 2008, by 1 p.m. at House Hearing Room 1 of the National Assembly."
The letter was copied to the Inspector General of Police; Chief SGT-At-Arms of the National Assembly Abuja and the DG, State Security Services (SSS), Abuja. THISDAY however gathered last night that Speaker Dimeji Bankole was prevailing on the committee not to arrest Balogun, but the letters were already out before he got in touch with Ozomgbachi and Wadada..
