The Kabale District administration has donated a piece of land on which an athletics camp is to be established. Charles Kawuma, the district sports officer, presented the land to Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) officials Moses Twesigomwe and John Bosco Bananuka over the weekend.
There are only two athletics camps in Uganda, both in Bukwo District. Yet Kabale has in the past produced some of the best athletes in Uganda.
"There is a lot of talent here. We hope to get the best out of this region. Besides, the camp will help the whole country," Twesigomwe, who also is the Kabale District Athletics Association, said while officiating at the MTN Western Region Championships on Saturday.
The land is allocated in Mutagamba, along Kabale-Rwamuchucu Road, near the home of former athletics great Peter Rwamuhanda who passed on last month.
Like Kapchwora which has produced most distance runners, Kabale is a high altitude area and the environment is serene.
"If you train from here and you don't win an international medal, count yourself as cursed before leaving your mother's womb," national coach Gordon Ahimbisibwe said after touring the area.
Bananuka, the UAF assistant general secretary thanked Hudson Kakuru (Kabale LC5 chairman) and Joseph Maira Mukasa (Chief Administrative Officer) for support. Construction of structures on the site starts next month.
