Nigeria: FG Asked to Release Contract Financing Policy

Gusau — Senate Committee on Works has called on the Federal Government to draw up a contract financing policy, to enhance proper monitoring of projects and ensure early completion.

Chairman of the Committee, Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, who made the suggestion while inspecting federal road projects in Zamfara State, said with the present arrangement, contractors cannot be blamed for asking for variations on projects awarded for execution.

Gaya said if there is a well-thought out policy on financing projects across the federation, it will enable contractors to complete projects on schedule without demanding for variations.

He expressed satisfaction with progress made on all projects inspected, which include rehabilitation of Gusau-Talata Mafara road awarded in December 2002, which ought to have been completed within 18 months. So far, only 17 kilometers is left out of the 94 kilometre project.

Other projects inspected are the 127 kilometre Jibiya-Kaura Namoda-Gusau road. The project involve rehabilitation of the entire road, as well as construction of 11 bridges across various intersections on the road.

At the Kaura Namoda-Shinkafi Sabon Birni road project, the committee urged the contractors to device means of blocking flood from River Shinkafi, so as to enable work to proceed on schedule.
