Residents in the Kavango Region have been warned to prepare for veld fires, which usually start in August with its dry and windy conditions.

"We should expect lots of fires in August, and we request everybody to be cautious," said Rundu District Forestry Officer Mwiikinghi Jonas.

He called upon farmers in the region to register for cut-line training - a programme introduced by Government to fight and prevent veld fires in the region.

Jonas said interested people have until the end of this month to register for the programme. So far, about 200 groups have signed up.

Trainees are taught how to design cut lines and firebreaks.

Upon completion of the training, they are expected to fight fires in their farming areas and villages.

Forest and veld fires are a major threat to the conservation of the natural environment and resources in the Kavango Region.
