The Councillor of the Kalahari Constituency in the Omaheke Region and Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Stephanus Mogotsi, has called on State-owned enterprises (SOEs) to plough their social development budgets into rural community initiatives.
Mogotsi said SOEs such as the Roads Authority and NamPort made significant contributions in his constituency during the just-ended financial year, 2007-08.
The Namibia Ports Authority (NamPort) donated computer facilities to three schools in the constituency, while the Roads Authority re-gravelled the D1681 road.
In an interview with Nampa on Monday, Mogotsi said Government had made great strides in terms of socio-economic development in his constituency, and deserved to be commended.
He said Government's efforts to change the mindset of communities towards the San people, and amongst the San people themselves for the sake of their dignity, were showing positive results.
As agriculture is one of the main sources of income in the constituency, Mogotsi praised Government for drilling new boreholes and rehabilitating existing ones through the community-based management system.
"It is evident Government is addressing the social needs and demands of the Kalahari Constituency communities gradually, and at a concerted pace," he said, adding they could not expect Government to meet all their needs and demands in one financial year.
