Maputo — The provincial court in the northern Mozambican province of Niassa has sentenced the director of youth and sport in the Niassa provincial government, Alfredo Ajana, and an accomplice named Vasco Ravia, to 16 years imprisonment for theft.
According to Wednesday's issue of the daily newsheet "Diario Independente", the two men were accused of stealing 1.2 million meticais (about 50,000 US dollars) from the coffers of the provincial directorate of youth and sport.
Ajana was transferred to Niassa from the central structure of the Ministry of Youth and sport in 2005. He is also a member of the Niassa Provincial Committee of the ruling Frelimo party.
Ajana's lawyer immediately announced that he would appeal against the verdict to the Supreme Court.
