Ondjiva — Angolan Government has released Akz 2.2 billion (one Usd is Akz 70,00) this year to boost the 2008/2009 agricultural season in southern Cunene province, a region that experienced floods in February and April this year.
The information was released Thursday in Ondjiva by the provincial governor, Pedro Mutinde, while laying the foundation stone for the construction of 2,500 houses for the floods victims.
The Governor said the money will be used in two phases, stressing that priority will be given to the zones most affected by the calamity, namely the districts of Kwanhama, Namacunde, Kahama, Cuvelai and Ombandja.
The programme will consist in social assistance to 26,915 people affected by the natural calamity.
The Cunene floods destroyed 4,423 houses, 134,000 hectares of arable land and killed 345 animals, including cows, goats, pigs and horses.
To Pedro Mutindi, the assistance reflects the attention and interest the head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, in addressing the problems afflicting the populations and meet the aspirations of the Angolan people in the various spheres of the economic and social affairs.
