Asmara — Study papers on the role and challenges of youths, as well as the causes of conflict and challenges in promoting peace in the Horn of Africa were presented at the ongoing Regional Youth Conference for Peace and Development.
In a paper he presented, Mr. Elias Amare outlined the impressive role youths in the region had played over the past 50 years in the search for peace, social justice and ensuring socio-economic development. He also stressed the need for making substantial investment in nurturing dynamic youths.
Mr. Elias further called on the youth in the region to enhance their participation in programs that would bring about gratifying development outcome so as to rebuff conspiracies designed to undermine development in the continent. He particularly stressed the need to actively work for peace and avoid falling into the trap of subservience, in addition to deploying their energy and talent in tackling domestic problems on the basis of internal resources.
Also in a paper she presented under the topic "Causes of Conflicts and Challenges in Promoting Peace in the Horn of Africa," Ms. Sophia Tesfamariam explained that different conflicts have been witnessed in the region over the past 10 years. She noted that internal and external factors in resolving the conflicts should be analyzed.
Ms. Sophia elaborated that the prevalence of inequitable condition among different parties, domination of political power by the few and the lack of fair distribution of resources and opportunities are some of the internal causes of conflicts in the Horn region. In this respect, she explained that the root causes of such a scenario are the former colonial powers. Ms. Sophia went on to say that control of African resources, unfair representation in international organizations and the existence of weak regional organizations are also some of the external causes of conflict in the Horn region.
