THE Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng is considering court action to force Premier Mbhazima Shilowa to divulge the response from agriculture, conservation and the environment MEC Khabisi Mosunkutu to allegations of corruption regarding approval of multimillion-rand land developments.

In March , the DA asked Shilowa to institute an inquiry into Mosunkutu's department's approval of at least eight multimillion-rand developments. The following month, Shilowa turned down the request, saying Mosunkutu had acted within the law. "After considering the DA allegations and having looked at the comprehensive response from the department, the premier is satisfied there is no basis for a commission of inquiry," said Shilowa's spokesman Simon Zwane.

But the DA is not satisfied. It wants Shilowa to make Mosunkutu's response public. Shilowa turned down DA MPL Jack Bloom's request for the document and said it was not for public consumption.

"I suspect there is corruption in this department and that Mosunkutu refuses to combat this either because he is incompetent or is himself implicated," said Bloom.

Zwane said the premier would not make correspondence between him and his executive public.
