In furtherance of efforts by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to train its men and officers in world best practices and position them to confront the rising security challenges in the country, the Force has organized a computer training programme for the Jos Police Command, Plateau State.

The one-month training programme, conducted by the Ivory Learning Academy (ILA), Abuja brought together over 100 officers and men of the Force from the Anglo Jos Police Command, which comprises Rantya division, the Police Band and Mopol 8.

The training exercise, which involved both theoretical and practical education sought to ensure every participant is able to have a basic knowledge of the computer and its functions, according to the Training Manager, ILA, Mr. Chibuogwu Okolugbo.

"We give them hands-on experience as lecture is being illustrated through the projectors; they watch and do what the instructor does. We also make the manuals easy for them to use whether in class or on their own", he said.

A Superintendent of Police and the Squadron Commander, Mopol 8, Mr. Damon Peters, who participated in the exercise said "It is a welcome development; it is the initiative of the Inspector General of Police. Before now, our men have been going out to various computer centres to acquire computer knowledge but with the coming of this to our door-step, our men who are on standby, especially the mobile men can acquire this knowledge, which is all important both within and outside the Force. Computer knowledge is a must and will help in keeping us away from other irrelevant games while on standby".

"A policeman that is not able to garbage in and out will be removed from the force. If it is not premature retirement then it is something else. So it is either you can operate the computer or you face the risk of loosing the job because I happen to travel outside the shores of Nigeria and I saw Force people using computers at the border and everybody is getting it successfully. So if there is something like that in Nigeria, it will be a welcome exercise. I think the IGP has done marvelous. His initiative in organizing this is quite commendable. I can assure you that with the zeal of the people coupled with that of the Commissioner of Police who has asked that every police man or woman in this Command should adhere to the instruction of the IGP, it will not be long everybody here becomes computer literate", said Divisional Police Officer in charge of Anglo Jos Police Station, Mr.Emega John.

Chairperson of the Training Academy, Mrs. Margaret Woherem, who was also present at the event expressed delight at the take off of the event and hoped the Force under the leadership of the present Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mike Okiro will bring computer awareness to enviable height among its officers and men.

Other participants said the exercise was an opportunity for them to operate a computer for the first time and vowed to buy computers as soon as the training was over to enable them to constantly adopt what they had learnt.
