THE American embassy has given Ndejje University books on development issue.

"We want to promote mutual understanding between Uganda and the USA. One way is to share books on key development issues by American scholars," Lisa Heilbronn, the public affairs officer at the embassy, said recently.

The books include American Foreign Policy in the Changing World, Fair Trade for All, Human Rights Promotion and HIV Health Management, among others.

Heilbronn advised the university staff to undertake Masters degree programmes at American universities, if they are to better impart knowledge and skills to their students as far as research skills are concerned. She encouraged the university management to apply for grants if they wanted to develop the communities they work in.

Receiving the books, the Ndejje University vice-chancellor, the Rev. Dr. Michael Senyimba, thanked the embassy for the donation and appealed for exchange programmes between US universities and Ndejje University.

He said the university was in the process of establishing a bookshop to encourage the culture of reading.

"We want to have a group of students and give them a number of books until they graduate, so that when they complete studies, they own the books.

We want to experiment with the system; though it is costly, so that the idea of owning a bookshop and preserving it remains in the minds of students," Senyimba noted.

The university secretary, Adoniya Kyeyune, appealed to the embassy to assist in upgrading the healthcare centre III up to grade IV status, to serve the community.
