Tanzania tennis players expressed optimism ahead of today's Tanga Cement international championships that gets underway at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club courts.

Riziki Salum and Boazi Kasiba said they are determined to set eyes on prizes both in the singles and doubles.

The event has attracted players from Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Rwanda Sudan and Zimbabwe.

"We have trained enough for the championship and our home ground advantage will also count towards success in the tournament," said Salum.

The duo said that despite the lack of international exposure in contrast to their competitors, they have enough experience to stand to their opponents.

While expecting to stage a captivating show, the duo urged tennis fans to turn up in requisite numbers to cheer Tanzanian players in the tourney.

"Fans need to turn up to support tennis players so as to keep the goal of victory in view," said Salum.

The tennis duo urged the Tanzania Tennis Association to embark on promotional efforts of tennis in schools and scouting for talent.

There is need to support local players instead of waiting for players who excel through their solo efforts, they asserted.
