There is rising tension at Usmanti ward, in Jere Local Government Area in Maiduguri metropolis of Borno State as the youths threatened to shut down an MTN mast in the area if their calls are ignored by the telecom giants to respect one of their corporate responsibilities of constructing a 200 meters access road leading to the mast.
The youths believed that the road would not only facilitate the company's operations but also open up their area that is "inaccessible during the raining season," said Garba Bukar Ngala, who spoke yesterday on behalf of the aggrieved youths.
According to the youths, before the sighting of the MTN mast in the area, they were considering engaging in community efforts to repair the road "as every effort to get the Borno State governor, whose residence is opposite the bad road, to come to their aid failed. Luckily MTN agreed to sandfill parts of the road to site T5631 at Usmanti".
Investigations by our correspondent revealed that nearly five months into the company's operations in the area, the road remains in a terrible state, making residents in the area to park their cars far away and trek home to their respective homes.

Our correspondent was at MTN office in Maiduguri for comments but was referred to the MTN regional office in Kano for detailed informa-tion.However, an official of the company in Maiduguri said, "We cannot comment on such issues but I urge the youths to be patient for sometime and also be law-abiding citizens", said the official who refused to give his name.
