An accountant attached to the Government House Yenagoa was yesterday shot dead by unknown gunmen in the Bayelsa State capital.

The name of the deceased was given as Mr. Austin Ogbobio and was until his death an accountant in the Governor's office.

The deceased was reportedly trailed to his apartment along the Erepa road, Yenizue-Gene and shot at close range.

However there are conflicting account of the incident as one version had it that the deceased was discussing with some workmen close to his residence when two men emerged from nowhere and pumped bullets into his body.

The other version stated that the deceased was trailed to his house by the gunmen who thought the briefcase he was carrying was stuffed with money and killed him after dispossessing him of it.

The gunmen were said to have disappeared with the briefcase he was carrying when they shot him fuelling speculation that they might have been robbers.

The news of the killing of the accountant sent panic among residents of the area who fled their homes while Government House was thrown into mourning as his colleagues were stunned by his untimely demise.

The Federal Medical Centre where his remains was deposited was besieged by sympathizers and family members as well as curious members of the public.
