Nigeria: EU-Prime Approves N1.4 Billion Work Plan

Abuja — The delegation of the European Commission has approved the final work plan for the European Union-Partnership to Reinforce Immunisation Efficiency (EU-PRIME) project for N1.4 billion against the initial fund allocation of N425 million.

The initial allocation was meant for 23 states through the project field offices for the implementation of the work plan which ends June 2009, of which Abia, Cross River, Kebbi, Gombe, Osun and Plateau would receive N16 million each.

A statement made available to LEADERSHIP revealed that the initial instalment of N425 million would enable the EU-PRIME project offices in the 23 focal states to renovate dilapidated health facilities and support the training of health workers to ensure the quality and effective delivery of immunisation services in the 23 states.

Since inception in 2002, the EU-PRIME project procured immunisation equipment worth over N2.1 billion, adding that the equipment has been deployed to strengthen and ensure quality immunisation service delivery in its 23 focal states and the EU-PRIME project has also built the capacity of over 47,000 health workers.

EU-PRIME project would last from 2001-June 2009 and its goal was to reduce the burden of vaccine preventable diseases like polio, in Nigeria, adding that the project was to ensure safe and efficient vaccination services were available in selected communities in the 23 states.

The 23 states to benefit from EU-PRIME project are Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Cross River, Ebonyi, Edo, FCT, Yobe,, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Yobe, Ogun, Osun, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, and Zamfara states.
