Nigeria: 'NNPC Probe Will Expose Obasanjo'

Abuja — Current probe of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company embarked by the House of Representatives will at least expose the immediate past president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, and confirm the allegations of looting of public funds against him.

This was disclosed by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Alhaji Umaru Dembo.

Dembo, who was expressing his grief yesterday while speaking on the Hausa Service of Radio France Internationale, RFI, lamented that even though President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua's government was "powerless" to punish the person who brought him into power, at least the former president would sure be disgraced as Nigerians would, at last, confirm how their monies were stolen.

According to him, "The probe can make an impact, but only if it was intended to do that. You can find wrong doings in anything that is thoroughly proven, and solutions to avoid them could be suggested for now or for the future. But the doubt is that, after all, will it be useful as the present administration was illegitimately forced on Nigerians by Obasanjo himself? As such, the government, apparently, may not do anything."

The former minister continued, "Still the effort of making the probe can be helpful in confirming the many allegations that strongly characterised Obasanjo administration. So, at the end, this will provide a room for precaution, even if Obasanjo and those he colluded with to loot our money could not be punished."
