24 July 2008

A new public toilet will soon be constructed at the Warda junction in Yaounde. The former public toilet which served Yaounde inhabitants for a good number of years, had gone out of use.

Yaounde city dwellers had to look for alternative public toilets within the town to answer nature's call. When Cameroon Tribune reporters visited the site yesterday, there was nothing left of the old toilet. The building had been completely demolished.

Actually, the Yaounde Urban Council is carrying out a project to build a modern public toilette on the site. The site, which is about 500 square metres, will host the new storey building with a parking space for vehicles on the ground floor. The upper floor will have a snack bar restaurant, a kitchen and toilets for ladies and gentlemen. The project is being executed by a Yaounde-based enterprise, CALYPSO. The cost of the work stands at FCFA 250 million and is expected to last for six months. Some of the workers of the company told Cameroon Tribune that work that is going on at the site at the moment is that of demolishing and clearing of the site for construction to begin as soon as possible.

According to the technical director of the Yaounde City Council, Philippe Arnauld Ndzana, the project is in line with the activities of the Government Delegate of the Yaounde Urban Council to beautify Yaounde town. He explained that the Yaounde Urban Council has decided to rebuild the Warda public toilette because of its strategic position in the town. He however said that the council is working hard to ensure that all public toilets in the town are in good shape. He said the public toilet at the EMIA junction in equally undergoing refurbishing.
