Cameroon: UNIFFAC Cup - Another Feather for Cameroonian Football

Martin Akuro Akwa

24 July 2008

The common saying that "everybody needs more", which expresses the insatiable nature of man was aptly demonstrated by the Limbe public during the just ended UNIFFAC tournament. Just weeks ago, in the presence of Heads of State of CEMAC member countries, Cameroon lifted the Unions football trophy. A few weeks after (from the 15th to the 22nd July), they have grabbed the UNIFFAC Cup played at the CDC Sport Complex, in Middle Farms, Limbe.

The Under-17 Lions were pushed to victory by the public whose quest for victory was noticed by the consistent applause at each move and shot at opponent's goal. Even some sports commentators were heard requesting the people of Limbe to invoke the "gods of the land" to enable Cameroon win the trophy. "Let Limbe go into the annals of history as the town where the maiden UNIFFAC Cup was won," the journalist commented. And as if the "gods of the land" listened to them, their wish like other Cameroonians came true when Ngaleba Ndongo Marc, captain of the team, from a goal mouth tussle, scored the 14th goal of the entire tournament.

Thunderous applause saluted the winning goal, in a football pitch considered by many as the best in the South West Province. The wetness of the pitch at times hindered the free flow of the ball. That explains why the final started late since pools of water had to be drained from the football field. At a press conference by Iya Mohammed, the FECAFOOTâ-àPresident stated that the tournament had been long overdue. It was supposed to have been played in December 2007, he said adding that the playing of matches everyday was due to the tight programme which had to respect date.
