Asmara — President Isaias Afwerki called on youths in the Horn of Africa to continue their struggle until they create solid ground for peace that would benefit future generations. He made the salient remarks today in a meeting with the participants of the Regional Youth Conference for Peace and Development.
Expressing appreciation to those who organized the conference, the President explained that the Eritrean people in the course of the 30-year long armed struggle strived not only to achieve independence but also foster good-neighborliness. He further underlined that the Horn region finds itself in the present stage as a result of the mismanagement and the negative effects inherited from colonial rule. The main source of instability in the region are the successive Ethiopian regimes and their readiness to act as servants of the major powers, the President elaborated.
Stressing the need for dedication and far-sighted vision on the part of the youth so as to resolve the existing problems, as well as promote peace and stability in the region, President Isaias reminded them to create a viable mechanism to this end. "As the past two generations have failed to create such a ground, today's generation should accomplish this mission," he stated.
Outlining the challenges that have to be met in order to achieve the set goal, President Isaias noted that as the awareness of the people in the Horn region has now reached higher stage, it would provide added impetus to the realization of the mission. He further pointed out that corrupt leaders, inefficient management, narrow-minded regimes and political parties are some of the causes dragging the region backward. In this respect, the President called on the youth to exert relentless efforts through drawing valuable lessons from past experience, and thereby develop common understanding and stance.
Moreover, he underscored that Eritrea would continue to exert vigorous endeavors in promoting peace in the Horn region through jointly working with all nationals in the region. President Isaias went on to underline that it is the responsibility of youths to emerge victorious in this struggle that demands sacrifices.
The participants said that they have personally witnessed the dedication of the Eritrean leadership in serving the people. They also stated that Eritrea sets an example of self-reliance to fellow Africans.
